From the summit to the sea, enjoy 38 miles of downhill coasting with only 400 yards of pedaling. Downhill Riding on Maui is always a thrill. Before sunrise, a van will take you to the 10,023-foot summit of Haleakala. Then, as the sun comes up, you'll coast past protea farms, cattle ranches, sugar cane and pineapple fields, and more.
CAMPING
Nature lovers will love camping on Maui. There are campsites near many choice beaches, but the real treat here is the chance to camp inside a volcano. There are two campgrounds located inside Haleakala Crater. Although the crater is large enough to hold all of Manhattan, the sites are limited to about 50 people. So be sure to make your reservations well in advance (808-572-4459). Camping permits are required on Maui; state and federal permits are free, but there is a charge for county park permits.
HORSEBACK RIDING
If you're looking for a stable mount, head to Upcountry Maui. The stables here offer guided rides of the island's wide-open spaces. The rides to Haleakala Crater and Oheo Gulch are especially beautiful.
ECO-TOURS
Eco-tours are a great way to take in Maui without taking anything away from the island's delicate balance. You can hike, kayak, bike, swim, camp and more on these expert-guided trips. Excursions usually last one to three days, and your equipment is included in the cost of the tour.
4x4 OFF ROAD
Maui's Hookipa Beach, just east of Paia, has been dubbed the windsurfing capital of the world. So, needless to say, conditions here are excellent. So good, in fact, that the O'Neill International Championship is held here each March and April. For beginners, the calm waters and gentle winds at Kanaha Beach in Kahului are the perfect place to learn the logistics of the sport.
