Tidal Pools

Tidal pools, such as this one in the Kipahulu District, provide varied saltwater habitats for plants and animals. Great fluctuations in salinity, temperature and submergence make tidal pools a harsh environment. A variety of organisms, including Limu (seaweed), ha'uke'uke (shingle urchins), 'opihi (Limpets), 'a'ama (rock crabs) and many others occupy tidal pools. Shorebirds, like the 'ulili or wandering tattler, can be seen foraging for invertebrates and limu in coastal areas.
